Tianyuan Mathematical Center in Northeast China
Tianyuan Mathematical Center in Northeast China is one of the three platform projects established by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Mathematics Tianyuan Fund in 2017.
The Mathematics Tianyuan Fund was established in 1990 as a special fund to promote the early realization of China’s goal of becoming a mathematically strong nation. It aims to achieve the goal proposed by the older generation of mathematicians, which is for Chinese mathematics to lead the world in the 21st century.
The Mathematics Tianyuan Fund is financed by government appropriations and managed by the NSFC. It is a special scientific fund established to bring together the collective wisdom of mathematicians, explore funding methods that align with the characteristics and development patterns of mathematics, and promote the construction of a mathematically strong nation. The fund supports scientific and technological personnel in conducting research, cultivating young talents, promoting academic exchanges, optimizing research environments, disseminating mathematical culture, and enhancing China’s innovation capabilities in mathematics.
After nearly 30 years of development, with the joint efforts of the NSFC, successive academic leadership groups, and mathematicians nationwide, the Mathematics Tianyuan Fund has played a crucial role in discipline development planning, adjustment of disciplinary directions, construction of academic teams, cultivation of young talents, improvement of research environments, and the training of outstanding mathematicians. It has made significant contributions to the rapid development of mathematics in China.
To better promote the balanced development of regional mathematics disciplines, the NSFC Mathematics Tianyuan Fund Leadership Group established the Tianyuan Mathematics Center Project in 2017. The project aims to build an exchange platform to facilitate cooperation and research. It focuses on several mathematical and interdisciplinary fields or topics, bringing together relevant research teams, addressing scientific issues, deepening cooperation among experts in various fields at home and abroad, cultivating young academic talents, guiding young people to enter the forefront of the discipline, promoting the cross-fertilization of mathematics with other disciplines and branches, and enhancing the overall research level of relevant fields or topics in China.
The first batch of Tianyuan Centers includes the Northwest, Southwest, and Northeast centers, with the Northeast Center primarily focusing on activities related to computational mathematics, large analysis, and statistics. Tianyuan Mathematical Center in Northeast China, with its academic committee composed of 17 domestically and internationally influential experts and scholars, and its executive committee consisting of mathematics discipline leaders from 23 co-built universities in the Northeast, including Jilin University, Northeast Normal University, Dalian University of Technology, and Harbin Institute of Technology, encourages both free exploration and proactive engagement with national strategic needs. Through various forms of academic exchanges and seminars, it creates a favorable academic exchange environment, strengthens close cooperation among scientists from various fields at home and abroad, promotes the cross-fertilization of mathematics with other disciplines and branches, nurtures emerging growth points in disciplines, strives to make major breakthroughs in relevant research areas, and effectively enhances the overall status of mathematical research in China. At the same time, it aims to cultivate a group of versatile, high-quality mathematical reserve talents and interdisciplinary talents adept at solving practical problems, striving to play a crucial role in promoting the overall level of mathematics in China, especially in the Northeast region.
